The name Totoro comes from a mispronunciation of the word troll (トロール, torōru) by Mei. She has seen one in a book and decides it must be the same creature. The Cat bus stems from a Japanese belief that attributes the power of shape-shifting to an old cat: it then becomes a "bakeneko". The Cat bus is a "bakeneko" who saw a bus and decided to become one.
